Abstract

The specific scientific objective is to examine the effects of statin use on the cognitive performance of Long Term Care (LTC) residents with dementia. The secondary objective is to examine the effects of statins on the survival of LTC residents with dementia. Results of the studies on the effect of statins on cognition are inconclusive. Literature supports both protective and adverse effects of statins on cognition. No studies to date have looked specifically at the cognitive effect of statins in patients with moderate to severe dementia in a LTC setting.
