Abstract
A program was developed for introducing second-year medical students to the assessment of function of older adults in a nursing home setting. Students completed the mandatory orientation as part of the course, Introduction to Clinical Medicine. The nursing home orientation consisted of an introductory lecture and interviews with nursing home residents which included physcial and cognitive assessments of function. Evaluation indicated that such an orientation can be successfully instituted early in the education of physicians to familiarize them with the nursing home clinical environment and the measurement of functional status in the elderly.
