Abstract
The digital computer has the potential for valuable support in the field of clinical medicine. Ten patients for elective surgery were interviewed and examined by a certified registered nurse anesthetist aided by a digital computer. Described is the logical design and construction of a computer assisted preoperative anesthesia management system using a series of experimental computer programs (Clinical Decision Support System) developed by IBM. The system consists of a device for gathering and storing patient data and also a system for making logical decisions from this data. Using this data, decisions were made by the computer. This evaluation was compared to the standard physician gathered data. Results indicate that the nurse-computer combination was superior to the physician's in the gathering and recording of patient data. The nurse-computer system also generated more decisions of potential use to the attending anesthesiologist. Program revision was undertaken on the basis of this data to improve the system.
