Abstract
The problem of whether or not a Cohen-Macaulay complex Δ is Gorenstein depends only on the reduced Euler characteristics χ ¯ ( l i n k Δ ( σ ) ) of the subcomplexes link Δ (σ) of Δ . This well known fact enables us to obtain a numerical characterization of Gorenstein complexes in terms of the combinatorial reciprocal property of certain rational functions associated with simplicial complexes.
