Abstract

A novel ultra wideband (UWB) pulse generator is proposed and implemented in this paper. The design is based on the transistor avalanche effect. The circuit employs an existing ultra-wideband pulse generation circuit as a trigger. An inductor is connected in series with the collector of a bipolar junction transistor (BJT) to accelerate reservoir capacitor charging. This efficiently reduces the output pulse trailing phenomenon. Circuit simulation produces a pulse with -9.096 V amplitude, 243.665 ps pulse duration, 116.956 ps rise time and good symmetry. The pulse waveform from the circuit implementation is consistent with the simulation results. The proposed design has a simple structure and low cost, so it is a practical solution for UWB applications.
