Abstract

Direct current (DC) power systems have reliable and high-performance structures. However, unlike the conventional alternating current (AC) power systems, the issue of protection is still challenging in DC power systems. This paper presents a new protection method for DC power systems, which has good sensitivity to high-resistance faults. The proposed method utilizes a simple approach for detecting short circuit faults in the DC power lines and protection of them. This method is easily implemented in practice. It is based on the online estimation of the apparent resistance of the line and continuous evaluation of its changes. Simulation results using PSCAD / EMTDC® show the high precision and accuracy of the proposed method for different types of faults in various situations. Experimental tests were also carried out on a small-scale network, which verify the simulation results.
