Abstract
The application of a standard automotive sparking plug as a series-triggered spark gap for a high-power xenon flash is described. The spark gap allows a standard xenon flashtube to be used at voltages considerably in excess of the tube self-breakdown voltage for the production of high-speed light pulses. A one-third peak height flash duration of 16 μs was achieved at 45 J total energy without the use of an afterglow quenching gas.
