Abstract
This paper uses high order Bezier curves to develop a 3D aircraft wing design tool and proposes a novel wing design approach. The tool has two interactive design platforms for 2D airfoil section and 3D wing geometry. In 2D, an airfoil is created by one lower and upper high order Bezier curve. Two upper and lower Bezier control points connected to the airfoil leading edge are constrained to be rotated by the same angle to achieve continuous leading edge. A method for designing advanced 3D wing geometry with sweep and lean is proposed by the combination of wing section rotation, re-scaling, and translation in 3D space with respect to the 3D stacking axis. A high sweepback wing and a transonic flying wing concept that are conducted as the design best practices demonstrate the state of art design capabilities of the advanced 3D wing design tool developed in this study.
