Abstract

A novel system multiplexing and program element identification scheme is proposed. Multiplexer periodically inserts program element information table (PEIT) that records position of each transport packet and associated program element identifier. De-multiplexer parses incoming PEIT and extracts needed transport packets based on position offsets. Elementary streams are identified, demultiplexed, and sent to respective decoders for further processing. Packet link table is introduced to improve system error resilience. Compared to packet identifier (PID) match filtering in MPEG-2 systems, proposed PEIT match filtering scheme has advantages in reducing memory access and bandwidth overhead, and is suitable for implementation with a general purpose processor.
