Abstract
A series of electro-optic polyimides containing azobenzene side-chain have been synthesized and characterized. The key step in the synthesis was the diazonium coupling to aniline-containing poly(amic acid) in nonaqueous solvent. The chromophore density was determined by 1HNMR spectroscopy. High chromophore density up to 100% by mole has been obtained due to the utilizing of the novel synthetic method, resulting in a large electro-optic coefficient. These polymers show high thermal stability monitored by TGA and UV/Vis measurements. The prepolymer poly(amic acid)s are soluble in many organic solvents and have good film forming property.
