Abstract

BackgroundFor more than a decade, national surveys have reported that most common deaths in the United States are preventable and related to nutrition. As a result, physicians have been urged to counsel their patients but with minimal improvement in nutrition medicine education in US medical schools.ObjectiveTo partner with various BU communities and enhance medical students’ knowledge, attitudes, and counseling skills in nutrition medicine.InterventionWe developed a novel student–centered model of nutrition medicine education that focuses on student mentored extra‐curricular activities to develop, evaluate, and sustain nutrition medicine. Using the NAA nutrition objectives from NIH and AAMC CurrMit software to evaluate nutrition content in the curriculum, we found that three‐quarter of pre‐clerkship objectives were met.ConclusionsThese findings are encouraging. We further plan to conduct program evaluations, administer surveys to students and faculty, and partner with national groups to improve population wellness and services.
