Abstract

Sparse linear array has been widely used for its good performance of large aperture and low cost. But this kind of array often suffers from its high level side lobes and grating lobes. This paper presents a two-dimension particle swarm optimization (2-D PSO) algorithm for the design of non-uniform sparse linear array to reduce the effect of harmful lobes. Both the positions and beam directions of array elements are considered as the two optimization variates of the proposed algorithm. The patterns and output SINRs are compared between 2-D PSO sparse array and pre-existing array, the simulation results show that 2-D PSO algorithm is more efficient for sparse array optimization. The robustness of the proposed 2-D sparse array is also verified in this paper.
