Abstract
In recent years electrical power production using wind turbine technology has became a prominent region amongst all non-conventional sources for researchers. Based on the aerodynamic configuration of wind turbine variable speed wind technology has been implemented far and wide to track ample energy from the fluctuating wind. From the reliability, maintenance, cost and efficiency point of view permanent magnet synchronous generator(PMSG) has been used to convert wind kinetic energy to electrical energy. As PMSG is a synchronous machine a robust control strategy is needed to achieve flexible and independent control. SMC based vector control scheme is implemented both in RSC (Rotor Side Converter) and GSC (Grid Side Converter) control as it provides flexibility in full speed range operation, high dynamic performance operation like fast acceleration, deceleration for both high and low performance application, decoupled control of the system. This paper focuses on the detailed d-q axis model derivation of PMSG and its independent control structure for a grid connected variable speed wind power system. Under normal operating condition both dynamic and steady state performance of PMSG is verified using MATLAB/SIMULINK.
