Abstract

A low-profile dual-band reconfigurable shared-aperture antenna (SAA) with large frequency ratio is proposed for 5G cellular handsets / base-stations operating at n78 (3.3-3.6 GHz) and n257 (26.5-29.5 GHz) bands of 5G wireless communication standard. At sub-6 GHz band the square slot etched from ground plane radiates when fed by an open-ended microstrip transmission line. Whereas, at millimeter-wave (mm-wave) a 2x1 array of slot-coupled microstrip patch antenna (MPA) excited by a T-junction power divider is proposed. A reconfigurable feed network employing two PIN diode is designed to switch between the operating frequency. The overall size of the proposed SAA is $40 \times 40 \times 0.508$. The proposed antenna has an impedance bandwidth of 200 MHz and 2.1 GHz at sub-6 GHz and mm-wave bands respectively with a simulated gain of 4 dBi at 3.5 GHz and 9.3 dBi at 28 GHz. The complete antenna system can be conformally engraved on mobile terminals and therefore is a potential candidate for 5G wireless communication systems.
