Abstract

A novel method for precise handling of sheet materials is described in the context of a solid freeform fabrication method. Individual cross-sections of a three-dimensional part are laser-cat from sheet material. A robot, using a selective-area vacuum gripper, extracts each desired cross-section from the waste material, and stacks it precisely to create three-dimensional layered objects. Details of the gripper design are presented, along with characterization of its performance and results of its use within a rapid prototyping system.
