Abstract
It is crucially important to detect residual stress of mechanical components for its strength, corrosion resistance, fatigue life prediction and dimensional stability, especially for the complex large-scale welding structures. This paper presents an improved EMD method to evaluate residual stress with vibration signal. The testing system of residual stress is built. At last, through experiments and applications on residual stress testing of complex large welded parts such as auto body, railway vehicles and aero components, the result show that it deserved to be studied deeply on application and popularization of residual detection method based on excitation vibration response. Meanwhile, evaluating residual stresses in large welded parts with different test methods validated the feasibility of the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method avoids destructive testing and simulations of the residual stress generation process to get a qualitative criterion representation of residual stresses conveniently and efficiently.
