Abstract

In this paper, a novel envelope shaping function for multilevel (ML) supply modulated power amplifier (PA) is proposed to control the real voltage offset (RVO) between the ML discrete supply modulator and the PA. The RVO of some general shaping functions will be analyzed and compared. With a specified RVO, the proposed function is derived after getting the new thresholds of ML supply modulator. The linearity and efficiency of the ML supply modulated PA can be controlled by the proposed function. For a 10 MHz bandwidth OFDM signal with 8.5 dB peak-to-average ratio, the proposed method is applied to maximize the efficiency of the PA with a saturated power of 48 dBm. The efficiency of the PA at an average power of 39.5 dBm is 4.6% higher than no shaping of the envelope.
