Abstract

Although paraquat (PQ) is a prominent and effective herbicide, it is hazardous to human health. Therefore, it is important to develop a method for selective detection of PQ. A novel pyrenyl salicylic acid fluorophore (Compound 2) was successfully synthesized using the Suzuki reaction and a hydrolysis reaction for PQ detection with a fluorescent turn-off mode. When PQ was added, Compound 2 acted as a highly selective and sensitive fluorescent PQ sensor in 100% aqueous media. The linear relationship between the fluorescence intensity and the concentration of PQ was in the range of 1.00 μM–100 μM. The detection limit of the method was 69.4 μg L−1 (0.270 μM), below the 200 μg L−1 limit recommended by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Additionally, Compound 2 was applied to measure the concentration of PQ in real samples.
