Abstract

We have isolated a novel gene from Arabidopsis thaliana which we postulate encodes a novel β-amylase ( BMY3), based on its homology to other β-amylases. The BMY3 transcript is mostly expressed in young floral buds and flowers, with barely detectable expression in leaves. Transcripts of both BMY3 and the published ATβ-Amy gene are circadian-regulated, with a peak in expression just before the light period in short day conditions, which might account for the remobilisation of starch during the night period.
