Abstract

In this paper, for the first time, all-optical demultiplexing based on photonic crystals is proposed and simulated for 16 dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) channels communication system. In this work a silicon substrate and silica thin layer including predefined 2-D rectangular array of holes in silica as photonic crystal is considered. All introduced holes are filled with suitable liquid crystal for introducing periodic layers having refractive index so close to silica matrix to obtain very narrow bandwidth channel selection. We used superprism effect in this work for more efficient demultiplexing. The proposed structure simulated using finite difference time domain (FDTD) method and the characteristics of the structure are evaluated precisely. It is shown that the proposed method has potential for DWDM applications with ultra high filtering property and low crosstalk. Also, the band structure of the proposed system is calculated.
