Abstract

Ammonia synthesis, being very exothermic, employs 150 atm and 300 to 500°C to achieve high conversion and fast kinetics. By adsorbing ammonia as it is produced, more moderate conditions might be used. A coupled reactor and pressure swing adsorption system are suggested as a means toward that end. Performance has been simulated for three cycle alternatives. The best cycle can split pure ammonia from the reactor off-gas, with recovery depending on the off-gas composition and pressure.
