Abstract

A novel porous composite membrane based on polyhydroxyalkanoate/polyvinyl alcohol (PHA/PVA) was successfully prepared by coupling of electrospinning and spin-coating method. The as-prepared PHA/PVA composite membrane can be used as an effective drug delivery system for levofloxacin (LEV) since the porous structure favored the material transportation. The membrane containing 0.05 and 0.1 wt% LEV displayed excellent bactericidal activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). On the contrary, the standing PHA/PVA composite membrane and the membrane with low content of LEV (0.01 wt%) had no conspicuous inhibitory effect on both strains. The aim of this work is to construct an effective porous polymer composite membrane, which will exhibit potential applications in biomedical related fields.
