Abstract

A photonic quasi-crystal fiber (PQF) based on the 12-fold symmetry quasi-periodic structure is designed for transmission of orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes. In this PQF, the effective refractive index difference of the degenerate modes is greater than 10−4 and 110 high-quality OAM modes in the wavelength range between 1.46 and 1.60 µm are supported. The characteristics of the PQF are numerically analyzed by the finite element method. This PQF with a confinement loss of less than 10−9 dB/m and effective mode area larger than 100 µm2 has many potential applications in mode division multiplexing for fiber communication systems.
