Abstract

Silicon carbide (SiC) devices have great potentials in inverter-fed motor. But their high switching dv/dt can increase the voltage stress on motor windings and cause partial discharges (PD). PD detection is routinely used to factory quality assurance test of high voltage equipment, Ultra-highfrequency (UHF) antenna are commonly used for the detection of PD. This paper proposes a novel PD detection method based on the radiation characteristics theory of shell slot antenna: The motor shell (Shell Slot Antenna) as UHF antenna for PD detection. In this paper, the working frequency band and radiation characteristics of shell slot antenna are studied. The PD test platform for insulation system of inverter-fed motor with impulse voltage was built, and the performance of the shell slot antenna was analyzed by comparing with the broadband archimedes spiral antenna (ASA). The test results show that the motor shell can be used as UHF antenna to receive the PD electromagnetic signal generated by the insulation system of inverter-fed motor, which greatly reduces the difficulty of PD detection of inverter motor. This study subverts the traditional design concept of UHF sensor and provides a new design idea for improving the UHF sensor in high voltage equipment.
