Abstract

We observe that the oppositely directed coupler possesses optical bistable property. This property arises due to effective feedback mechanism as a result of opposite directionality of the phase velocity and energy flow in the negative index materials channel. We also report on the various means of tailoring the optical bistability power threshold and hysteresis loop for applications related to fast optical switches.
