Abstract

In this work, a loop micro pipeline system is proposed for continuous extraction and recovery of phenol in aqueous phase through the circulation of organic phase. There are two flow patterns of two phases in whole pipeline: Segmented flow and Stratified flow. Phenol extraction and stripping processes are conducted through the pattern of segmented flow in the micro pipe, and then organic and aqueous phases are separated by their stratified flow in the expanded pipe. The circular flow of organic phase in the pipeline system plays a role as carrier to extract phenol from feed phase and discharge it into stripping phase continuously. The results show that the extraction and stripping processes only need 19 seconds respectively in the micro pipe when the flow rate is 3.0 mL/min, and the recovery efficiency of phenol reaches up to 94 %. In addition, mass transfer efficiency of two phases could be improved by the flowing of helical-coiled path. It is expected that such a micro pipeline system has potential for practical application in the recovery of phenol from aqueous solution.
