Abstract

Partial shading conditions (PSC) caused by the nearby trees and dust are inevitable in photovoltaic (PV) generation systems. Traditional maximum power point tracking (MPPT) methods may fail in tracking the global maximum power point (GMPP) under PSC. This paper proposes a novel global maximum power point tracking (GMPPT) method whose tracking speed is faster than the previously published GMPPT methods since it directly estimates the locus of GMPP based on the shading information. The advanced performance of the proposed method has been validated through the simulation using Simulink. Two popular MPPT methods including perturb and observe (P&O) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) were also implemented, along with the proposed method under different shading scenarios, for the comparative validation.
