Abstract

A novel flow field for the effective utilization of reactant gasses has been proposed in this work. The proposed flow field consists of a spiral pattern as compared to the already exiting serpentine flow channels. This study exemplifies the use of modeling in the design of flow channels for a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). This model is based on charge and mass balances in the gas diffusion electrodes and the catalytic regions in fuel cells. A two dimensional (2D) and a three dimensional (3D) models will be used to study the velocity distribution, water management and current density distribution. A comparison will be made between the proposed spiral flow fields and the existing serpentine flow fields.
