Abstract

This paper introduces a novel family of pulse-width- modulated (PWM) converters, which uses a new zero-current- switching (ZCS) PWM switch cell, featuring ZCS of all the active switches and zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) of all the passive semiconductor devices at entire load range. Besides operating at constant frequency and with reduced commutation losses, these new converters have less current stress and voltage stress in comparison to the general ZCS-PWM converter counterpart. In the paper, the theoretical analysis and the operation principles of a novel ZCS-PWM boost converter taken as an example will be described before the new converters are proposed. The validity of the proposed ZCS technique has been verified by the experimental results, which are obtained from a lkW, 50 kHz, new ZCS-PWM boost converter at full load.
