Abstract

A method has been developed for an accurate evaluation of rapidly changing work function values during adsorption and desorption processes in the FEM. The field emission current of an arbitrarily selected plane in the adsorbed state is normalized to the current in the clean state for constant applied voltage. By use of properly arranged plots of the image force corrected Fowler-Nordheim equation the corresponding change in work function will be obtained immediately without the use of conventional FN-plots. Thus it is possible to retrieve even rapid changes in work function with high accuracy from a simple record of probe hole current versus time. The evaluation method will be presented as well as work function variations found for the (100), (110), (111) and (112)-planes of W and Mo versus O2-coverage.
