Abstract

A novel enzyme, dCTP deaminase is found in cells of Bacillus subtilis infected with phage PBS 1. Results indicate that the synthesis of this enzyme is induced specifically by phage infection. No other enzymes which deaminate deoxycytidylates are detectable. The dCTP deaminase acts only on dCTP and is inhibited noncompetitively by dTTP. In B. subtilis infected with PBS 1, it appears that this enzyme is primarily responsible for the formation of dUTP required in the synthesis of the phage DNA.
