Abstract

A novel electro-optical chromophore, 1-hexyloxyl-2,5-dimethyl-4-(4′-nitrophenylazo)benzene (HDMNPAB), is reported which is suitable for the performance of the photorefractive effect in a low glass transition temperature photorefractive polymer composite. A high two-beam coupling gain of 141 cm −1 and a grating amplitude of Δn = 2.7 × 10 −3 at 84 V μm −1 are obtained with the composite film of HDMNPAB doped in poly( N-vinylcarbazole): 2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone charge transport network in a weight ratio of 44 : 55 : 1. In this composite, HDMNPAB acts as both the electro-optical chromophore and the plasticizer. The glass transition temperature of the composite is measured to be 44°C. Long lifetime and high stability of the composite film are also proven.
