Abstract

Coordination polymers (CPs) are widely used for the detection or removal of heavy metal ions in wastewater due to their excellent performance, but CPs that can simultaneously detect and remove heavy metal ions are rare. In this work, a novel dual-functional coordination polymer ([Zn8C152H112Cl4N32O24S6(H2O)4]·7H2O, Zn-CP) has been successfully designed and obtained, which can simultaneously detect and ultra-effectively remove Fe(III) ions in water, and the removal rate can be as high as 99.8%. Zn-CP has a good quenching response to Fe(III) ions, and can reduce the concentration of Fe(III) ions in water to a drinkable standard (0.3 mg/L). Even in a complex water environment, Zn-CP can still detect and ultra-effectively remove Fe(III) ions. Furthermore, Zn-CP has also been successfully synthesized on a large scale. The developed Zn-CP holds a high potential for detecting and efficiently remediating water contaminated by Fe(III) ions.
