Abstract

A novel double-layer leaky-wave antenna (LWA) array for radiation efficiency improvement based on substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) is proposed. The LWAs are integrated on the first layer of the array, and a SIW waveguide is designed on the second layer. The input power is fed into one of the LWAs, and the remaining power at the end of this LWA is coupled into the SIW waveguide on the second layer through coupling slots. The power is then transmitted and coupled into another unfed LWA on the top layer again. As a consequence, the radiation efficiency gets improved, as well as the gain, while the structure of the antenna maintains in a compact size. Simulation results are given to demonstrate the efficiency of the design.
