Abstract

A variable mapping method for CPM (continuous phase modulation) is proposed in which the data symbols are decided by both the data bits and the accumulated phase states in order to simplify the detection. The author consider two schemes, 1REC and 1RC, and evaluate these schemes in terms of simplification of detection and error performance. It is found that the receiver for CPM can detect symbol-by-symbol simply like /spl pi//4 shift QPSK. Computer simulation shows that 1RC is insensitive to sampling timing offset. It is found that one can apply phase detection to the CPM scheme without sacrificing such advantages of CPM as efficient bandwidth and constant envelope by only using a variable mapping method. >
