Abstract

ISSUE: Our institution has had a standard practice in place since 1996 to ensure that during a time of renovation, construction and demolition, hospital occupants are protected from mold and other potentially harmful environmental organisms. The Standard Practice, written in conjunction with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Guidelines for Environmental Infection Control in Health-Care Facilities has been continually improved and refined over time. In our institution, each construction or repair activity is categorized as a Class I or a Class II risk based entirely on whether or not the activities significantly increase the risk of infection. The use of only two classes leans heavily towards protection and was based on the high number of immune compromised patients who traverse our hallways on any given day.
