Abstract

Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) are widely used in military missions. The covert and miniature Data Links systems need to be developed to control the vehicle, so the real-time communication module is a very important component to MAVs. Ultra wideband (UWB) has been demonstrated to possess both low probability of intercept and detection (LPI/D) as well as Anti-jamming features when properly deployed in a communications system design. Cognitive Radio is an emerging approach for a more flexible usage of the precious radio spectrum resources. In this paper, a Cognitive Ultra wideband Radio (C-UWB) communication systems for MAVs (MAVCOM) is proposed which can be used for LPI/D transmission of digital voice, data and high resolution video image. The link budget calculation and the estimation of the signal transmission speed are reported assuming UWB signal transmission from a flying MAV to the basement. The initial results show that the C-UWB MAVCOM has broad application prospect.
