Abstract

A biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) sensor, based on an immobilized mixed cultures combined a Clark-type oxygen electrode, has been developed for the purpose of monitoring for industrial wastewater. The BOD sensor was based on a pre-tested designed microbial consortium, resulting in 4 min for one measurement followed by 8 min recovery time. Reproducibility of responses was blow 5.1%. The influence of pH, temperature and heavy metal ions was also discussed. Good agreement was achieved between the results of the sensor BOD measurement and those obtained from conventional BOD5 analysis of several industrial wastewater samples.
