Abstract

A novel bi-directional AC/DC converter topology is presented in this paper. This circuit topology offers a single-stage non-isolated solution for power conversion, suitable for ESS applications. In the proposed power circuitry, the DC-bus voltage can be higher or lower than the peak of the AC voltage. The detailed analysis reveals that the converter characteristics are different in the rectification and inversion modes, hence it requires different control strategies for each mode of operation. In the rectification mode, only the DC-bus voltage control is employed whereas in the inversion mode, both the DC-bus voltage control as well as the grid current control have to be used for generating the converter switching pulses. The operation of the proposed topology is validated through simulation and experimental results.
