Abstract

In this paper, a novel solution that can be adopted to enhance the bandwidth of compact multi-band planar inverted-F antennas (PIFA) is introduced. In this approach the ground plane is divided into two parts and connected with an inductor that can be used to adjust the equivalent length of the ground plane. Studies carried out in this paper demonstrate that with the help of this novel bandwidth improvement technique a compact quad-band (GSM850/GSM900/DCS1800/ PCS1900) PIFA with only a volume of 20 times 40 times 6mm3 can be obtained. The approach can also be used to improve the performance of any other types of mobile antennas.
