Abstract

A method for precise and accurate determination of ppm to percentage level uranium in rocks, soils and stream sediments by laser induced fluorimetry (LIF) has been developed. Iron, above a ratio (iron to uranium) of 100, which is always the case when uranium is present at ppm level, interferes seriously. A prior removal of iron enables the determination of uranium over a wide range (ppm to % level). The method has been successfully applied to a host of silicate rock, soil and sediment samples, and the results obtained have been validated by conventional pellet fluorimetry after pre-concentration of the analyte.
