Abstract
Based on WLAN and UMTS coexistence scenario, a novel adaptive load balancing algorithm is proposed, in order to achieve efficient network resources utilization under unbalanced network conditions. Firstly, we propose a Markov model-based adaptive load control algorithm to adaptively allocate new arriving calls. Secondly, considering the difference of the network load, we adaptively calculate the amount of vertical handoff. Finally, considering extra signaling for vertical handoffs, a cost function-based terminal selection algorithm is proposed to perform vertical handoffs. Simulation results show that, the proposed adaptive load balancing algorithm can effectively improve fairness in network load, reduce network congestion and signaling overhead, and thereby improving system performance.
