Abstract

Summary. The name Paullinia pinnata has been used universally in a sense which excludes Linnaeus' primary element of this species. Typification by this element would result in the rejection of the name Paullinia. Alternative lectotypification is possible and reasons why this should be adopted are given. Paullinia pinnata dates from the 'Species Plantarum' of 1753, where it is designated by the phrase-name 'Paullinia foliis pinnatis: foliolis incisis, petiolis marginatis'. A starred reference is given to 'Hort. Cliff. 52' (in error for 152) and a reference to 'Roy. Lugdb. 464'. The phrase-name is a slight modification only of that of Paullinia No. 3 in the 'Hortus Cliffortianus': 'Paullinia foliis pennatis, foliolis saepius quinis incisis, petiolis communibus membranaceis'.
