Abstract

This paper points out a serious inaccuracy in the calculation by Chakrabarti, Bhattacharyya, Datta and Saha of the two-photon photodissociation amplitude of HD +. The error lies in the omission, in the velocity gauge, of a delta-function term in the integration, for large radii, over intermediate states. This contribution is comparable to the principal value integral that they do retain, and, in fact, cancels the latter at frequencies below the single-photon threshold. A related error leads the authors to the incorrect conclusion that the length gauge cannot be used. We also discuss the relation between the two gauges in the context of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation.
