Abstract
The occurrence of a species of Gleditsia in New Guinea was plausible enough for me to include it in my Manual of New Guinea Legumes (in press) without misgivings. A sterile specimen had been reported from West Irian by Kanehira and Hatusima (Bot. Mag. Tokyo 56: 362 (1942)) to belong to this genus but they had not been able to identify it with a known species. Through the kindness of Dr Tamios Suzaki, Herbaria of the Faculty of Agriculture, Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan, a number of critical specimens were kindly loaned to me at the Lae Herbarium during my secondment there as Tropical Botanist. A glance at the supposed Gleditsia suggested Sapindaceae and a hunt in that family showed that the specimen was Dictyoneura obtusa Bl. Gleditsia does, however, occur in the Philippine Is. and its limit to the south is a fact of phytogeographical significance sufficient I think to warrant this note of correction. Although I cannot trace that this erroneous record has actually been reported in phytogeographical literature it is certainly in various card indexes of botanists interested in New Guinea botany.
