Abstract

A magnitude 3.3 earthquake occured in the Central Virginia seismic zone at two seconds after noon (EDST) on September 5, 1972. Residents of Richmond, Powhatan and Goochland Counties were alarmed but no damage was reported. A felt area of 6000 sq. km. (2300 sq. mi.) was mapped by means of post card questionnaires. The maximum intensity was IV and the epicentral coordinates were determined as 37.6° N–77.7° W.
