Abstract

The social and economic conditions for the emergence of East Pakistan as a district nation (Bangladesh) go back almost to 1947 when Pakistan itself was created. Did a sense of separate Bengali political identity likewise exist at the level of mass consciousness long before the open military repression of 1971? This note takes advantage of a survey datum gathered in 1964 to provide a clue that the answer is: no.
