Abstract

It can be argued that most modern love songs derive from a romantic tradition which goes back to the poetry of 12th-century France. Love Is Strange is a play which examines the way this tradition has been transformed by the electronic age. From Michael Jackson’s glitter glove to Princess Di’s hair, our contemporary understanding of love Is shaped in the image of shared public fantasies. But how far into the communal fantasy is a citizen allowed to go before society deems him dangerous or insane?
