Abstract

It is shown that a one-to-one correspondence exists between Valence Bond spin-coupled wavefunctions for the π-electrons of the positive and negative ions of alternant hydrocarbons. The consequences of pairing, in the form of relations between the corresponding spin and charge density functions of the positive and negative ions, arise as a result of the integral approximations involved, and a simple modifications is proposed which is sufficient to produce different spin densities for the positive and negative ions.
