Abstract
ACCORDING to information published by the Kremlin, Soviet defence expenditures in I977 amounted to a modest 43%0 of national income produced, and accounted for only 7 I% of total state budget expenditures. Moreover, the Soviet data indicate that the level of Moscow's defence spending has declined in the I970s. The defence allocation of I7.2 milliard rubles contained in the state budget for i977 represents a reduction of 200 million rubles from the I976 defence appropriation and is some 700 million rubles below the I970-73 budgets (see Table i).
